OLYMPIA, Wash. - Cancer is now the leading cause of death in the state. Health officials say it's killing more people than heart disease for the first time.
They believe a statewide drop in smoking is responsible. The latest statistics from 2004 show nearly 11,000 people died from cancer that year, 400 more than heart disease deaths.
A report also shows Washington has a higher death rate from strokes, suicide and Alzheimer's disease than the rest of the country.
