Certification costs grow for organic farmers

WAPATO, Wash. -   The production of organic foods in the state has doubled in the past five years. The cost to certify organic foods is out-pacing the fees charged by the Department of Agriculture's Organic Food Program, which is putting a financial strain on some organic farmers.

Over the last few years, the Organic Food Program has struggled to keep up with the increased demand for organic certification.

Revenue under the current organic certification fee structure has not kept up with the increased certification costs for farmers and food processors.
