Another high speed police chase in Yakima

YAKIMA, Wash -- Two weeks after a high speed chase by police ends in the death of two bystanders, police chase another vehicle at high speeds around Yakima.

The car was driving down 5th Avenue without its lights on about 1 a.m. Police tried to pull the vehicle over when it took off. During the chase, the suspect began throwing bags out of the car.

The suspect reached speeds of 85 miles an hour while driving down Summitview Ave.

Police deployed spike strips, and the car's tires were deflated.

"We see it quite a bit in pursuits," said Capt Greg Copeland of the Yakima Police Department. "The driver or passenger will start throwing things from the car. Sometimes they throw drugs, sometimes they throw weapons. In this case it was bags of items. The only thing the officer could think of was that they must be stolen property."

The driver was taken into custody, and police found stolen items in the car -- including credit cards. The suspect has been convicted twice of trying to escape police.
