Victim's Family in Shock after Sheriff's Deputies say Boyfriend Shot Her to Death

NACHES, WA -  Rebecca Tatum's family says they're in shock right now.  They say the couple appeared to be happy... and last night's events caught everyone completely off guard.

"This is from six months ago," says Kari Drennen, Rebecca's aunt.  She shows KNDO a picture of Tatum and her boyfriend Michael Spencer in happier times.

"Very devastating. Overwhelming," Drennen says, talking about when she first heard the tragic news.

She says her niece lived what appeared a quiet life with Spencer and their family in a home on a dirt road in rural Naches.

"You wonder who, what, where, when and why," Drennen says, her voice trailing off.

The Yakima Sheriff's Office remains tight-lipped about the investigation into last night's murder.  They did say Tatum was shot several times in the torso.  Spencer made a preliminary appearance in court today, charged with involuntary homicide.

A neighbor who declined to go on camera says she heard a gun shot at around 9:00pm last night.  She says Spencer came running to her house for help.

Tatum's family did not want to discuss what happened, but tell us she was two months pregnant.  They say the couple's two-year-old girl and a four year old boy witnessed the shooting.

"We're just trying to keep the kids busy.  Keep their mind off of things," says Drennen.
