Shift of Power in House Could Have Big Impact on Hastings Influence
YAKIMA, Wa - Democrats taking control in the House could have a real impact on voters who live in the Fourth district.
Congressman Doc Hastings easily defeated his challenger Richard Wright last night, but a political science professor from Yakima Valley Community College says, with democrats controling the House, he'll lose the power to influence policy and bring funding to his district.
Hastings is an assistant whip right now in the House, but the Republican Party could overhaul its leadership.
"I think the most interesting thing to watch out for is whether Doc Hastings, in the next congress, continues to be one of their whips in the minority party," says Dr. Tim Jeske, Political Science Professor at YVCC, "Currently, as a whip, that gives him a lot of influence on what happens in the House of Representatives."
Dr. Jeske says Hastings is also the third ranking member on the Rules Committee, which controls what bills get voted one. That will certainly change with democrats in control.
