48% Of Charitable Donations In Washington Actually Went To Charity

KENNEWICK, Wash - How would you feel if only ten percent of the money you contributed to a charity actually went to the intended cause?

On Thursday, Secretary of Sate, Sam Reed revealed some information about how much money some fundraisers in Washington actually donate.

This isn't meant to keep people from being generous with their money, but rather to remind them to look into each charitable organization they donate to, Reed said.

Reed released a report of the top ten organizations and bottom ten organizations for donations.  It includes "Inservice America", which donates 100 percent to charity and "Charitable Auto Resources", which actually spent too much money, so none went to charity.

"They have the right and I would say even the obligation if they're unfamiliar with the charity to ask who they are and who the person is and who he represent," Reed said.

He said by law, the organization has to answer those questions.

People in Washington gave more than 500 million dollars last year, and about 48% of it went to charity, Reed said.
