Driver hits gas meter and takes off
KENNEWICK,Wash. - A driver hit a gas meter at a Kennewick Chevron and drove off.
Kennewick police searched for the suspect. Tape surveillance showed that the passenger of the vehicle entered the store, bought cigarettes and then got back into the vehicle.
Police said it happened around four o'clock Sunday morning at the Chevron Gas Station at the intersection of Vista Way and Kennewick Avenue.
The gas meter is on the side of the building. When the driver hit it there was an explosion and natural gas was let out into the air.
Police said this could have turned deadly. Natalie Farnworth and her husband own the gas station and said they are upset.
Farnworth said, "There was a potential for quite a big explosion, but the police came and the fire department came and they were able to get a hold of the natural gas and shut everything down."
Police said the slightest spark combined with the gasoline pumps and leaking natural gas could have taken down the whole building.
Police continued to search for the person driving the vehicle and asked anyone with information to contact police.
