RICHLAND, Wash.- Fluor Hanford hits a cleanup milestone a month before it is due.
The contractor has emptied the first trenches holding waste containers on the site.
Nearly 10,000 containers were taken from the trenches.
The containers hold debris, tools and other waste from plutonium production during the 1970s and 1980s.
The project started in October 2003, and was supposed to be done by the end of this year, but crews finished early, keeping them on track to finish cleanup of all 75,000 drums by the end of 2010.
