KENNEWICK, Wash. - We're learning more about a new trick thieves may be using to take one of your most valued possessions this holiday season. They're riding in pairs looking to take off with your car.
Tuesday was one of the coldest nights of the year. A woman left her small SUV warming up in her drive way on 811 23rd Place in Kennewick. She went inside and about five minutes later her car was gone.
Police said the crooks may be driving through neighborhoods in pairs and when they spot a car running without you in it, they're ready to take off.
"It doesn't take long when you have a vehicle running for somebody to steal it. Even if the vehicle is locked it doesn't take much to break a window and steal it," said Kennewick Police Sgt. Brian Swartswalter.
If you leave your car running, you of course could get it stolen but you might also get slapped with a fine for it because it's a crime in Kennewick. Police said they just don't have time to investigate crimes that are easily preventable.
