Man Killed While Crossing I-82
YAKIMA, Wash. - A semi-truck ran over and killed 31-year-old Heriberto Pacheco of Yakima on on I-82 near Union Gap on Monday night.
Sergeant Ed McAvoy of the Washington State Patrol said just a little after 7 p.m., Pacheco attempted to cross I-82, near the Nob Hill Boulevard exit.
That's when a semi-truck traveling westbound, hit Pacheco and killed him at the scene. McAvoy said witnesses saw the man step in front of the semi-truck. McAvoy said the man did leave his car on the shoulder of the freeway.
He also said the man was wearing dark clothing, which made it hard for the truck to see him on the freeway.
A car that was parked near Pacheco's vehicle left the scene and McAvoy wants answers from the person who drove away.
"After the collision took place, that car did leave the scene, so we do need to speak to that car and let or ask him some questions about what that person did see as far as the pedestrian that crossed the road," he said.
McAvoy doesn't know why the man crossed the road and he did say that the driver of the semi-truck wasn't under the influence of alcohol.
Washington State Patrol is still investigating the incident and they are currently talking to witnesses. If you have any information about the accident, call WSP.
