Using Cell Phones To Keep Safe While Driving

YAKIMA, Wash. - If you're traveling this winter, a cell phone is an important item to take with you as you cross the mountain passes.

U.S. Cellular representatives said many people come into their store to purchase phones just for traveling.

And they say most cell phone providers have phones geared just for long trips.

U.S. Cellular's Jason Lowry said relying on a cell phone when driving through winter conditions is a good idea, especially when you get close to mountain passes.

"I'm sure it'd be a lot faster to find help if you had a cell phone to use whether than to hike somewhere while it's snowing and really, really cold outside," he said.

Here's a few tips to keep you safe when traveling with a cell phone:

-Keep phones fully charged

-Invest in a car charger

-Keep phones where you can easily pick them up

-Call 511 for updated road conditions
