Fire Leaves Family Homeless, Kills Cat

YAKIMA, Wash. - A house fire on Cowiche Canyon Road leaves a family homeless and kills the family's cat.

Firefighters responded to the house on the 5900 block of Cowiche Canyon Road at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon and were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

The house had heavy damage throughout and destroyed the living room.

The family was not home at the time of the fire, so there weren't any injuries but they lost most of their personal possessions and their cat.

"This time of the year we're fortunate it's not really cold, we don't have our hoses freezing up, so this time of the year we can have some problems with cold and freezing weather," Yakima Fire Department Lt. Bruce Drollinger said.

The family has found a place to stay and is getting assistance from the Red Cross

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and fire fighters do not know if there was a working smoke detector.
