Driver Hits Kennewick Power Pole

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Benton County PUD officials said two businesses were without power Friday night after a van took police on a chase and crashed into a power pole.

Police said it started off as a car prowl at 4th and Johnson in Kennewick.  The driver of a van took police on a chase after four suspects in the car were accused of stealing a purse and CD player from another vehicle.

The driver crashed into a power pole near 1st and Washington and caused a gas leak.  Police said traffic lights went out and live wires fell.

The PUD Safety Director Stephen Frost said, "This was extremely dangerous for the suspects, authorities and the public.... If those guys knocked that line down on their vehicle there's a good chance they would have been electrocuted."

Three of the four people that were in the van were arrested and sent to jail.  Police said drugs were found.

PUD workers said Penguin Plumbing and Custom Wood Work remained without power Friday night.
