City of Yakima Looking to Make Big Cuts for 2008 Budget
YAKIMA, Wa - Yakima Mayor Dave Edler says inflation is straining the city's budget.
The city council just approved the budget for this coming year, but they are putting together a sub-committee to look for ways to save $2 million dollars from the budget in 2008.
Mayor Edler says the city is not making enough money to keep up with inflation, so they are going to spend the next year looking for places where they can cut spending.
"It's really affecting our community," says Edler, "I read a letter from a disgruntled citizen this morning, who's experiencing a high rate of property crime in some of his businesses that he owns. We just do not have the force that we need to truly care for this city."
Mayor Edler says police, fire, parks and rec and streets have already been hit with cuts and more will likely be on the way in 2008.
