Plans for 16th avenue west of Yakima Air Terminal

YAKIMA, Wash.- What to do with 16th avenue, now that the FAA and the Yakima Air Terminal want the city of Yakima to close it. The stretch of road under demand right now is between Washington and Ahtanum. That stretch of 16th lies in the Airport Safety Overlay.

City Manager, Dick Zais says the city has been rehashing these options:

  • One option would be for the city is to close that stretch of 16th avenue
  • A second, to modify it between Ahtanum and Washington
  • A third option could also be to expand 10th avenue and make changes there

Zais says the cost to extend and expand 10th avenue could total over three million dollars. A report on what to do with 16th avenue was presented to the Yakima City council Tuesday afternoon. Right now city council is weighing it's options, with other factors like environmental reviews still on the list of things to do.
