WHITSTRAN, Wash.- The Port of Benton is ready to show off a revolutionary new pellet gasifier.
Gasifiers have been around for decades, but the Port of Benton says this is the first one to run off organic biomass.
FruitSmart and the Port of Benton are holding an open house Friday in Whitstran.
The machine takes worthless products like feedstock and used hops and, burns pellets made out of them.
Right now, FruitSmart is using it to dry out seeds in their warehouse.
They hope it'll change the way they can use gasifiers.
"There's becoming more and more biomass or agriculture bioproducts available, and people aren't sure what they're going to do with them, and so if we can turn them into energy, that would be a good thing obviously as we're looking for alternative energy sources," said Port of Benton Engineer Robert Wright.
The Port says they're finding that the biomasses burn hotter than wood a lot the time.
If you'd like to go to the open house, it's Friday afternoon at 1:00 at the FruitSmart facility in Whitstran.
