Locked Kennewick Mailboxes Broken IntoPosted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, Wash. - Many people are expecting cards and presents in the mail, but thanks to thieves many people might not get their packages.
Thieves stole from a number of locked mailboxes. Police think they pried them open.
It happened in Kennewick at the Cherry Hills Mobile Home Park sometime Thursday night.
Postal officials took the destroyed mailboxes to the Pasco Postal Headquarters and said they will not be able to fix them.
In total, 166 homes were affected in the Cherry Hills mailbox break-in. It has been an ongoing problem this holiday season that has members of the Cherry Hills Community really upset.
The Pasco Post Master Dana Alderson said, "It's just so wrong. You feel violated when mail is touched."
Police all over the area are reporting similar situations. Friday afternoon Kennewick Police said a citizen found a bag full of mail in her garbage can in the Canyon Lakes Area.
Police said they are also investigating mail thefts in the South and West Kennewick.
West Richland police said they found a bag of stolen mail in the street.
Alderson said, "It's so personal because what is in the mailbox is meant just four them and it's sad especially at this time of year, when so many people are counting on what comes in the mail or they're looking for something specific. It's just disheartening."
Police ask residents to contact authorities is they see suspicious behavior near mailboxes.
