Police not responsible for suspect's death

TOPPENISH, Wash -   The Washington State Patrol has begun their investigation of the death of a Toppenish man who was kill while fleeing police.

Early Sunday morning, Toppenish Police tried to stop Isaiah Hernandez. The 18 year old man, fled police and led them on North on highway 97. After turning onto East McDonald Road, Hernandez jumped out of his car and tried to climb a barbwire fence -- his car rolled on top of him.

According to SGT. Ed McAvoy of the WSP, the pursuing officer's car twice collided with Hernandez's Ford Taurus during the chase but did not chase the Taurus to lurch forward, crushing the man.

"Unfornately, the car was still in drive and accelerated down the embankment," rolling on top of him.

McAvoy said the WSP has the officer's dashboard video, and it confirms the sequence of events.
