Yakima Police hope to halt auto theft

YAKIMA, Wash -- Yakima police are trying a new strategy to combat auto theft.

The police department bough 200 steering wheel locks, and are giving them out free to anyone who lives in the City of Yakima.

The hope is to raise awareness of the problem, and to do provide a tool to stop it.

According to LT. Nolan Wentz, of the Yakima Police Department, a car is stolen just about every day in Yakima.

Any resident can pick up a lock during normal business hour at the Yakima Police Station.
