YAKIMA, Wash -- When you call they always answer. But there aren't enough of them. The Washington State Patrol has several openings for radio dispatchers.
Like many dispatch units around the country, Yakima's WSP office suffers from high turnover and problems recruiting new applicants. Dispatchers work long, sometimes stressful hours, and odd shifts. There are always two dispatchers on duty, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And there are no holidays or weekends.
Still, Virginia Wortman loves her job and want other to experience the joy of helping others, and protecting lives.
