TRI-CITIES, Wash. - The champagne flows and everyone is excited but police warn that shooting a gun off to celebrate the new year is illegal.
Police said you could spend the night in jail if you are caught. Most city ordinances do not allow anyone to fire a gun into the air but authorities said it happens every year around midnight.
Many people shoot the guns as a way to celebrate and ring in the new year but officers warn that the bullets will eventually come back down and could seriously hurt or kill someone. Pasco Officer Tom Ninemire said, "We've taken reports on hit cars, damaged houses. The bullet has to come down somewhere."
Police said they will have a zero tolerance when it comes to the crime.
