Naches Pool Needs Help To Stay Open

NACHES, Wash. - The people of Naches are fighting to save their pool.

They met on Wednesday night to figure out a way to come up with about $60,000 to pay for the pool this year. They're planning to ask people from as far as Tieton for private donations.

But that's not all they discussed at the park board meeting. They also looked ahead to funding the pool for the next two years. A special levy on february six will provide money for 2008 and 2009.

But they want voters to pass that levy, so they can concentrate on getting the funds for opening the pool this summer. The park board doesn't want to raise fees or cut hours.

Instead, they're hoping that they'll get the help needed to keep an important part of their community open.

"Well if the pool isn't open, what are the kids going to be doing all summer, probably a lot of them will be getting into trouble and there won't be swimming and so their at ease, so what are they gonna be doing all summer long," Naches resident Ted Cowan said.

The pool has about 200 swimmers per day during the summer months.

And here's how you can help:

Call park board member Margaret St. Martin at 653-2971.

St. Martin says they've already received a few helpful donations, but they need much more.
