YAKIMA, Wash -- Yakima's multi-year, multi million dollar irrigation project is on schedule and just under budget.
The City of Yakima began replacing the 100 old the system last year. Currently they are replacing pipes around South Naches Avenue and Union Street -- part of the backbone of the system.
The project will replace thousands of feet of irrigation lines over the winter. According to Dave Brown, of the City of Yakima, cold weather is part of the reason why the project is coming in under budget.
"I think part of it is because we are in the winter and construction companies are always looking for work in the winter," said Brown. "If we were doing this in the summer, like traditionally you would, we would be competing with all the other projects in the valley."
The four phase project will cost about twenty million dollars to complete, and should be finished in 2013.
