Arbitrator Rules Against Yakima Police Chief and City Administrators
YAKIMA, Wash. - An arbitrator has ruled that fired Yakima Police Officer Mike Rummel must be re-instated as a policeman and paid back wages.
The State Public Employment Commission ruled in October that Yakima Police Chief Sam Granato fired Rummel as retaliation against the police union.
Rummel was fired in May of 2005 for what Yakima City Manager Dick Zais says was inappropriate behavior that violated a "last chance" employment agreement. The arbitrator's ruling says those actions did no justify his firing.
Zais says the discrimination claims are inaccurate and irresponsible. He also says there are still several other issues to be dealt with before rummel will be returned to duty.
