YAKIMA, Wash. - Firecrews from Naches Heights, Cowishe, and Tieton responded to a report of a tree falling on a man at the 2900 block of Young Grade Road in Naches Heights.
The accident happened around 6:00 Tuesday evening. A 50 plus foot tall evergreen had been uprooted from strong wind gusts in the area and crews spent around 10 minutes just to locate the man. The 73-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chainsaws and heavy lifting equipment had to be brought in to remove the tree. The fallen tree had missed near by power lines but also damaged a nearby home.
While this type of accident is unusual, fire crews say people should be aware that high winds can uproot mature everfreens. People are urged to be cautious and homeowners should assess the trees in their yards for the possibility of damage to their homes and personal injury.
