Alleged Window Smashers Arrested
KENNEWICK, Wash. - KNDU told you the story about Kennewick detectives looking for people going on window smashing joy rides. You tipped off police, and officers captured the people they think are responsible.
Officers said our viewers played a key role in their investigation. They said without you they couldn't have found the vandals who smashed thousands of dollars of windows.
25 times, a group of eight teenagers allegedly smashed out windows across the Tri-Cities, totally $10,000 in damage.
It started in late December when someone threw a rock at 1511 S. Jefferson Street.
Officers thought they were looking for only a couple culprits, but after you saw the story, and tipped off police, officers realized the smash-ins were more than a few random broken windows.
"In fact we found there's not one group of suspects there's two groups working in concert. Apparently in their own words "for fun", pretty malicious," said Sgt. Ken Lattin, Kennewick Police Department.
Police arrested 18-year-old Alex J. Soulek and 7 other teenagers for first degree malicious mischief. The group allegedly smashed out the back window to Dori Roberson's Dodge Caravan.
She's happy the group will face the consequences for their actions.
"I was hoping that eventually they would. I figure they were kids who are going to talk to somebody and eventually someone would turn them in," said Roberson.
And police said viewers like you had a lot to do with making the arrests.
"We're talking $10,000. It's a major crime and it would not have been solved had it not been for the viewers."
Although police believe the group broke a lot of windows they don't think the group stole from any of the owners. Police said one of the boys in the group was responsible for $8,000 in damages.
