Protocol in an Accident Backup

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash.- In the backup surrounding an accident Tuesday afternoon, Washington State Troopers were busy ticketing people trying to avoid the rush.

Troopers say several drivers pulled onto the median, turned around on the I-182 onramp from 395, and drove the wrong way back toward Highway 395.

They were all given a $388 ticket.

One driver had too many people in his car.  He got a nearly $800 fine.

"As we were clearing the scene traffic was still backed up, and we started observing vehicles cutting across the median. We then observed another 6-7 vehicles going the wrong way trying to avoid the traffic, so we in turn stopped them," said Trooper David Brandt.

Troopers say the best thing to do in a jam like this is just be patient.

If you try to get off the road like these drivers.

You could get in the way of emergency vehicles, endanger yourself and get a hefty fine.
