Fire Destroys Family's SUV
YAKIMA, Wash. - A fire destroyed an SUV on Wednesday night near 16th Avenue and Tieton Drive. A part of the engine caught fire while the person was driving. Everyone in the SUV escaped without injuries.
Lt. Jason Ray of the Yakima Fire Department says they're still investigating the cause of the fire.
All they know is that it started somewhere in the engine. The driver noticed the smoke and flames coming from under the hood and alertly pulled over on 16th Avenue, near Tieton drive.
That's where fire officials arrived on the scene. They were able to put out the fire within 10 minutes. Lt. Ray says if your car catches fire -- don't panic.
"Again, best thing to do is to pull off the road, get out of your car," he said. "A good tip is to always carry a fire extinguisher in your car. It'll slow the fire down if not put it out before we get there."
Lt. Ray says the incident held up rush hour traffic in a busy area for about 20 minutes. Units from the Yakima Fire Department were spread thin due to being called out to a structure fire happening at around the same time just west of Toppenish.
As for the SUV, it's a total loss.
