WASHINGTON - It is no secret smoking can cause some serious heath problems now more and more people have put their butts out for good.
There is a new study out from the Washington Department of Revenue.
The study looks at how many cigarettes are smoked each year. It found that 29 percent fewer cigarettes are being consumed compared to ten years ago.
There are less smokers and those that do smoke are not are smoking as many cigarettes.
Washington State officials said the numbers have gone down because there are more anti-smoking efforts, increased cigarette taxes and the country as a whole is better educated.
Cheri Stoker from the American Cancer Society said, "Smoking is deliberately poisoning yourself . The report is very good news."
Today 17 point 8 percent of adults in the United States smoke which is the fifth lowest in the country.
