YAKIMA, Wa - The Yakima Police Department will provide security for the memorial service of Major Alan Johnson at the Yakima Readiness Center on Saturday.
They assisted the Yakima Sheriff's Office when the Westboro Baptist Church protested at the funeral for Sergeant Lawrence Morrison a year and a half ago.
Captain Greg Copeland says the key is to keep the peace between the church protestors and those that don't want them there.
"We try and handle it by having a lot of officers. And keeping a lot of distance between the Westboro Baptist Church and counter protestors," says Captain Copeland.
Copeland says the church usually has no more than 10 members at a protest.
As many as 600 people are expected to attend the memorial service.
