WASHINGTON - A new study suggested that binge eating is the most common eating disorder in the United States.
Anorexia and Bulimia are well-known eating disorders, but binge eating leads the pack when it comes to eating disorders.
Researchers at Harvard's medical school and McLean Psychiatric Hospital said the study was the first national census of eating disorders.
Kadlec Hospital Dietician Nadine Mitchell said, "I don't think people recognize binge eating as an eating disorder but it truly is."
The study found that 3.5 percent of woman and two percent of men suffer from binge eating which is defined as uncontrolled bouts of excessive eating.
Mitchell said that many people use food to fill a void. She compared binge eating to other forms of self-destruction and said it is a physiological problem.
She said, "Food never rejects us. It's a great friend we know what to expect and we're never going to be rejected."
Doctors said that binge eaters are at a very high risk of obesity related diseases.
