WASHINGTON - The numbers are growing and it is costing the country more money. Childhood obesity is being called an epidemic.
Doctors report about 18 percent of America's children are considered overweight. President Bush and the First Lady met with food, beverage and entertainment industries Thursday to talk about improving the message that children see in the media about health and fitness.
The Diet Center of Richland is in the process of creating a special program for kids because the obesity problem in the Tri-Cities.
Owner Donna Tefft said, "It breaks my heart when I see children struggling to get their back pack on and get across the street not everyone has a problem but it's there and I know it's a huge problem."
The number of obese children in the country is triple what it was 25 years ago.
