Governor Signs Bill to Protect Grieving Military Families
OLYMPIA, Wa - Governor Gregoire signed a bill that requires all protesters to stay at least 500-feet away from any funeral or memorial service for a fallen soldier. It's the first bill passed in 2007.
The governor spoke to us by phone this afternoon. She says her husband is a Vietnam Veteran -- and he asked her to make this a priority.
"I had been at a funeral in Ephrata for one of our former guardsmen," says Governor Gregoire, "As well and this church threatened to demonstrate and I saw what that did to the family, I saw what it did to the community in trying to get themselves ready for this disruption."
The governor will attend the memorial service for Maj. Alan Johnson. It will be held at the Yakima Readiness Venter tomorrow (Saturday) at 2pm in the afternoon.
