YAKIMA, Wash -- On a cold and dreary day, family and friends turned out to remember Major Alan Johnson of Yakima.
Many today didn't even know him but wanted to honor him, and support his family if members of the Westboro Baptist Church showed up to protest. In the end, the protesters did not come.
Hundreds of family and friends were on hand to remember Johnson. Also there was Washington Governor Christine Gregoire, a day after sign a bill that would require protesters at military funerals to keep a distance of 500 feet.
Friends remembered Johnson as a strong leader, easy going commander and a man of strong faith.
He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on February 14th. A memorial fund has been set up in his name at Carepointe: 1415 South 34th Ave. Yakima, WA 98902. For more information: www.thecarepointe.org. (509) 949-0556.
