KENNEWICK, Wash. - Super Bowl Sunday turned into a major drunk driving enforcement night for police across our region.
While they were on the lookout for drunk drivers, police spotted a car possibly swerving between lanes on Kennewick Avenue and Union Street. A trained DUI expert said the man driving the car failed several sobriety tests once he was pulled over. The man was arrested and taken to the Benton County Jail for a blood alcohol test.
Initial tests showed the man was well over double the legal limit and had to spend the night in jail.
Even though the process of arresting someone for DUI takes several hours, the arresting officer said taking drunks off the road is necessary.
"Stopping that vehicle could have saved a life and that right there was well worth it," said Officer Matt Newton.
Area police said they did not see a spike in drunk driving arrests as of Sunday evening. However, officers warn anyone arrested for DUI will face serious legal and financial consequences.
