Richland Man Has Stand off with Police; Family is Safe

RICHLAND, Wash. - Kris Gaeta and her two children are out of their Richland home.  Richland Police Captain Mike Cobb said they were released from their residence just before 11:30 p.m.

The children are reported to be safe and are in the care of Child Protective Services.

We've spoken with 34-year-old Salvador Gaeta but we're not going to reveal our conversation until this situation is resolved.

Benton County Sheriff's Deputies tried to serve legal papers taking two children at 1937 Orchard Way in Richland from Gaeta.  When deputies arrived at the home, they said Gaeta did not let them in.

Negotiators were on and off the phone with the man throughout the day Monday.  Neighbors living near the home were evacuated, and many said they've never seen a situation like this before.

We've spoken to the Gaeta's family members and they said the family in the home is doing well.

Investigators are working to decide what the man will be charged with once he's in police custody.
