Shoplifter Turned Violent

KENNEWICK, Wash. - A shoplifter turned violent after police said he was caught trying to steal condoms from the Kennewick Safeway.

Kennewick Police said he started to choke Safeway security workers after they confronted him about taking the items.

It happened Saturday afternoon at the Safeway located near Kennewick Avenue and Highway 395.

No one was hurt and police took the man to Benton County Jail.

Kennewick Police Sergeant Brian Swartswalter said, "He (the suspect) grabbed him by the neck and tried to choke him instead of facing a simple shoplifting charge which is a misdemeanor now he's looking at going to prison for what he's done."

Police said a number of Safeway employees saw him attacking the security guard and stepped in to help.

Police said they arrested him for armed robbery and assault.
