Trial of Mother Charged with Killing 2-year-old Son Will Start Wednesday
YAKIMA, Wa - A Moses Lake woman charged with killing her two year old son will go to trial on Wednesday in Ephrata.
Today, the judge ruled evidence that she used drugs during her pregnancy cannot be introduced, but prosecutors can use statements to show she was not truthful about her drug use with doctors.
In 2003, Maribel Gomez was arrested for killing her son Rafael. The case has highlighted failures in the state's foster care system. Rafael was removed from his mother's care on four separate occasions and placed with a foster family. Several months after he was returned to his mother for a fifth time, he was dead.
The foster family's grandmother lives in Yakima. She hopes Gomez will be punished for what she believes she did.
"I just hope that there can be some closure, and that justice is done. Because there's been no closure, and it's just been left so raw for us. And now, my daughter having to relive it all... All over again," says Charlotte Riel-Wellner, the mother of the woman who was Rafael's foster mother.
