YAKIMA, Wash -- The 1B State basketball tournament wraps up at the Yakima SunDome Saturday night -- and organizers say its been a success.
1B schools are some of the smallest in the state. In past years, the Sundome hosted the championships for much larger schools, with a big economic boom for the city.
Some feared that few would attend this year's tournament. And that hotels and restaurants might not benefit.
But organizers say previous 1A and 2A basket ball tournaments started small as well.
"The first year we had it, it continually grew," said Gene Rostvold, tournament director, "and I think it will happen here as this becomes a tradition in Yakima."
Organizers says about 17,000 attended this years tournament. While that is less than previous years, its well ahead of what they were expecting.
