Five Yakima Schools Put on DOE Toxic Sites List

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, wa -    Five schools from the Yakima area have been put on the State Department of Ecology's list of toxic sites.

Many schools in the Yakima area have been built on -- or near -- orchards, where pesticides have been used.

Ecology officials say lead and arsenic have been found in the soil at Barge Lincoln, Hoover, Terrace Heights and Whitney elementary schools, as well as Wilson Middle School.

But the Yakima School District says children are not directly exposed to it.

"A child would have to get through so many inches of soil actually ingest it or eat it," says Mary Beth Wright, Yakima School District Community Relations, "You know elementary kids are out there on the playground, but really it would take a lot of work to get down to this soil."

Gilbert and Robertson elementary schools were put on the list last year, but cleanup for those schools was pushed back to this summer.
