Child Healthcare Bill

OLYMPIA, Wash.- More of the state's children could soon have access to healthcare. The final decision now rests in the hands of Governor Christine Gregoire.

The new bill would provide coverage for 38,000 kids over the next two years. Right now, an estimated 73,000 state children don't have healthcare.

Governor Gregoire says the bill will cut future health care costs and make good on the state's promise to get all kids covered by 2010.

Gregoire says, "This should save us money in the long run. It's the right thing to do, and most importantly it will keep our children healthy so they can learn in school.

Last state session, lawmakers added enough money to give coverage to about 10,000 kids. Governor Gregoire says the bill also includes sections to help get kids immunized and a program to combat obesity.
