House Passes Mendoza-Aguilar Bill

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WA - The Washington State House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill yesterday to make eluding police a felony.  Right now running from police can result in a maximum of sixty days in jail. Under the new bill, offenders will face three hundred and sixty six days of imprisonment if it is proven that they were trying to evade police.  Because that sentence is over a year, it would put offenders in a state jail as opposed a county jail.

The new measure is named the Mendoza-Aguilar Bill, after two young men from Yakima who were killed when a man trying to flee police crashed into them on Nob Hill Boulevard.  That measure now heads to the senate for final approval.
