Investigators Look for Clues in Fire at Old Darigold Building
Yakima, WA - Fire investigators still don't know what caused the fire, But they think they know where it started.
They're focusing their investigation on an area in the building's north end.
The old Darigold building has been a staple in downtown Ellensburg for decades, and in one day, it's been reduced to this.
"This is where my studio was," says Julie Prather, owner of Flat Glass Revisited.
She's anxious to get inside the building to see if there's anything left for to salvage.
"I didn't get much sleep. This has been pretty devastating."
Neither did firefighters. They battled the fire all day yesterday. Now they are looking through all the debris to answer the question how this fire started.
"From witnesses and firefighters on the scene we know it started here," says Joe Seemiller, Kittitas Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal, "It started about thirty yards in here in the building's north end."
Seemiller is one of three investigators on the scene. He says they are not ruling out any possibilities.
Even if they do find a cause soon, what will it do for tenants like Prather. She's is one of many artists who rented space in the building, but she never anticipated something like this.
"I don't have insurance," she says.
Some business have been devasted. Others are trying to move on.
Evolution Salon has already moved to another salon on a temporary basis.
They're taking appointments.
