Boycott Threatens Toppenish Businesses

Toppenish, WASH - Remarks last week made by Toppenish Mayor, Bill Rogers, has upset some Yakama Tribe members.  Mayor Rogers said that the city can't effectively fight against crime becuase there isn't enough money in the budget to fight crime due to tribe members not paying sales tax.  These comments have sparked talk about a boycott by natives against local businesses in Toppenish.

Rosa Sampson, a Yakama Tribe member and owner of Rose's Native Designs, says if natives stopped coming into her store she could lose up to 75 percent of her business.  Sampson says she has talked to tribe officials and they have told her that if there is a boycott, it won't be officially supported by the tribe.
