Ike Volleyball Player Diagnosed with Bone Cancer
YAKIMA, Wash - Just a few days after her 16th birthday Eisenhower sophomore Shayla Holwegner recived a devastating blow. While playing with her club volleyball team Shayla fell and broke her leg. "She just fell backwards. It looked like her knee brace had fallen off and her leg was kind of to the side," says teammate Traci Schweyen, who was on the court when Shayla was injured. Shayla was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Pasco for surgery. Then, a simple broken femur turned into a life-changing ordeal. Shayla had bone cancer. "She called me right before surgery and she told me. I couldn't believe it," says Shayla's close friend Anna Johnson.
A large cancerous tumor was found in Shayla's leg. More tests revealed multiple tumors in her lungs, two large tumors near her heart and spine, and ten other smaller tumors throughout her body. Shayla and her family immediately packed their bags and headed to Seattle where Shayla started chemotherapy on March 7th. Because of the severity of the tumors, Shayla could be in Seattle for over a year. Her parents have moved into the Ronald McDonald house to be close to their daughter while she undergoes treatment. Meanwhile, Shayla's friends and teammates have banded together to help support their friend. Local businesses have started fund raisers for Shayla's family to help cover the mounting medical bills. Shayla's school mates organized a card-signing for the 16 year old to help lift her spirits while she recovers. Teammate Traci says it's very tough not having her best friend at practice and at school anymore. She texts Shayla throughout the day just to see how she's doing. "She's had a couple of times when she broke down but she's very strong. She's a happy person and she's really excited to get through this."
