Police Arrest Pendleton Murder Suspect, Friends say Self Defense

PENDLETON, Ore.- A murder suspect is in custody after a shooting in Pendleton Thursday night.

Friends and neighbors say alcohol and an argument led to a single fatal shot.

Friends say Summerfield was simply defending himself, but police and the prosecutor believe differently.

Police arrested 69 year old Charles Summerfield without incident at the scene.

They say he shot a 49 year old friend inside Summerfield's trailer around 6:40 PM.

Summerfield appeared in Umatilla Circuit Court Thursday afternoon charged with murder.

The victim's identity has not been released yet because police haven't been able to notify his family.

Summerfield is in jail, and may never leave.

"Right now, a single count of murder, intentional murder, which in Oregon, if you're convicted is a life term with a minimum of 25 years in prison," said Umatilla County Prosecutor Dean Gushwa.

Under Oregon state law, Summerfield is being held without bail.

He's scheduled to appear in court again on April 13 for a pre-trial hearing.
