Tri-Cities, WASH - The Better Business Bureau is warning about a new scam involving fake magazine sales. It may be headed to your neighborhood.
Apparently a group of teenagers in Portland have been going door-to-door selling fake magazine subscriptions. Officers arrested several members of the group, but police anticipate the scam may be on the move.
The teens claim they're from places like local schools raising money for their organizations. They ask for checks, cash or donations. But money doesn't go to the schools, and you don't get the magazines.
If someone comes to your door. Here's what you should do:
Get as much information on the organization as you can.
Confirm police know they're in the neighborhood, or the organization is familiar with the sale.
Requests for cash are red flags.
And if even if everything looks okay, make checks payable to the company or organization only.
