Richland Grad Stumetz wins another WCC Honor

SPOKANE, Wash. - Jeremy Stumetz, a freshman pitcher for the Gonzaga University baseball team, has been named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday.

Stumetz (2-1) posted three solid relief outings last week as the Bulldogs posted a 3-1 record, including taking a WCC series from Santa Clara University two games to one. For the week, the Richland, Wash. native pitched 10.0 shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out seven en route to earning one win and posting two saves.

Tuesday, in non-conference action against regional rival Washington State University, Stumetz threw 5.0 two-hit innings enroute to the 12-6 win.

On Friday, the right hander allowed one hit over three innings, while striking out three as he picked up the save Friday in Gongzaga's series opening 3-2 win over Santa Clara. Sunday, in the series finale, Stumetz earned his team-leading third save of the season, no hitting the Broncos over the final two innings of Gonzaga's 6-3 win.

The honor is the second of the rookie's career, as well as the sixth Bulldog WCC accolade this season. The selection also marks the third consecutive week a Gonzaga hurler has been named Pitcher of the Week. Stumetz previously earned the honor on March 26. Junior Brandon Harmon wasa named the conference's Pitcher of the Week for the past two weeks. Junior third baseman Darin Holcomb earned Co-Player of the Week recognition on March 26, while senior Clayton Mortensen was named WCC Pitcher of the Week on February 12.
