Shred Day

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Kennewick Police were out shredding Saturday, trying to keep you from being a victim of identity theft.

CI Shred brought a truck to the Target in Kennewick. It had an industrial strength shredder that can shred up to 7,000 pounds of paper an hour. They estimated that about 350 people came to shred their documents and they brought in 5,000 pounds of paper.

Kennewick Police say that people should shred many more documents than they think. They say any document you have that has information you don't want other people knowing, should be shredded.

They say that often people think just tearing up their documents will prevent someone from stealing their identity. But, they say, it doesn't take a criminal much to get an account number that they can use to use to steal someone's personal information.
