Water Bottles Could Be Worth More in Oregon

Posted: Updated:

PENDLETON, Ore.- You've been able to get a refund for recycling pop cans for years, but just now, the state is trying to include plastic water bottles.

Lawmakers are trying to extend the five-cent refund to plastic water bottles.

Right now, cans and beer bottles are covered, but water bottles aren't.

It's an effort to keep garbage off the side of the roads, and recycle more, but some think it could cause problems for the grocery stores that'll be forced to handle them.

"If they're collected in grocery stores, there's potential for contamination, because who knows what's been in these empty water bottles, so that's really a big issue," said State Senator David Nelson.

The original bill would have given a ten-cent refund for the bottles, but they've lowered that to try and help out with the state budget.

The bill still needs to go to the house and the governor for final approval.
